Bring Your Own DeviceBYOD

A policy that permits employees to use their personal devices — smartphones, laptops, tablets — to access corporate systems and data, introducing security challenges around device management and data separation.

In plain English

BYOD policies are convenient but introduce real security risk. A personal device may have no encryption, no endpoint protection, and no centralised management — meaning if it's lost or compromised, corporate data on it is exposed. Conditional Access policies in Entra ID can restrict what BYOD devices can access, and Microsoft Purview can prevent data being saved locally to unmanaged devices.
